Fans will get a sneak peek at Tennessee’s football team during an open practice at Neyland Stadium on Aug. 17.

The Vols will practice at 7 p.m. Admission is free and the concession stands will be open. Fans may enter from Gates 14, 20 or 21 beginning at 6 p.m. Free parking is available in the G-3, G-4, G-5 and G-10 lots, as well as Staff Lot 9.

“On behalf of Team 117, I would like to invite the best and most passionate fans in the country to help us prepare for the upcoming season,” first-year UT coach Butch Jones said in a school release Friday. “We hope to see everyone at our open practice on Saturday, August 17th at Neyland Stadium as we continue to work toward the opening of the 2013 season.”

Tennessee is scheduled to conduct a two-a-day session on Aug. 17. One of the practices will likely be early in the morning.

Tennessee players officially report to camp Thursday. The season opens at home against Austin Peay on Aug. 31.

“It’ll be a great opportunity for us, just like our spring game, to put our players in a crowd environment,” defensive line coach Steve Stripling told high school coaches at the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic kickoff luncheon at Thompson-Boling Arena on Friday. “If you get a chance, come join us.”

As a interested fan, who hasn't played football in 50 years, I think this is a sign that 2013 will be rebuilding not a return to glory.
I've followed UT since the '51 Sugar Bowl. I have hopes that Coach Jones can take off in his third year. I certainly hope, no matter what, he gets 3 years.

Glad you used the word pathetic because that's a perfect description of people like you...Born losers who can find fault in anything said...If it's not negative, you won't say it....You're the kind of person who would win Power Ball and complain about the taxes....Maybe they can laser that " L " off your forehead for ya....

This is great. The team gets some extra snaps in front of a crowd . . the crowd gets to help the team and a practice run at tailgating for the upcoming season. Hope both make the most of it.

This was written by Tom Mattingly in 2009. I love reading about the General:

Sometimes sportswriters, even in the 1920s, come up with an idea that hits home years later.

The year was 1926. It was a Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 6. The baseball pennant races were in full swing.

That morning's Knoxville Journal contained this note on page 9, a "relatively obscure item," as Russ Bebb called it years later. It foreshadowed the excitement we see on campus today.

"…Coach Bob Neyland will gather his Vols at Shields-Watkins Field at 8 o'clock and start the Orange and White aspirants on the rocky road to glory."

Sweet!

cant wait for August 17th at 7pm. We'll get a lot of free publicity over this, especially if a huge crowd shows up. Everyone who can should make their best effort to be there! This is just another of Coach Jones' amazing things he has done since becoming head coach. If he can coach as good as he can recruit and pump up the fan base, Tennessee is in for another run like the 90s! GO VOLS!!!!
